Wagner's 200th anniversary gets an oil-themed "Ring"

By Michael Roddy

BAYREUTH, Germany (Reuters) - The sometimes staid audience for the annual Wagner festival in the Bavarian opera house he built was bracing this week for a new production of "the master's" mythic "Ring" cycle inspired by American TV, Hitchcock's "Psycho" and the pursuit of oil.

For a new production for the 200th anniversary of Wagner's birth, Berlin theatre director Frank Castorf said "Rheingold", the first in the four-opera cycle, was set in Texas and opened at a motel on Route 66 - the road that snakes through America.

"It's a place where you would meet a figure like Jim Morrison," the lead singer of rock group "The Doors" who died aged 27, Castorf said.

At a press conference on Thursday, with Wagner's great-granddaughters Eva Wagner-Pasquier and Katharina Wagner in attendance, Castorf said he had also drawn inspiration from film director Quentin Tarantino, big American cars and the American love of Coca-Cola.

The production, which will have its premiere on Friday night, has already prompted speculation of potential scandal in the German press, but Katharina Wagner was unfazed.

"It's not about whether I think the 'Ring' is good or bad, it's important that it's exciting and people talk about it," she told reporters.

Castorf said he had also incorporated Mount Rushmore, the monument to U.S. presidents in South Dakota, into the production but had replaced their heads with those of Stalin, Lenin, Marx and Mao.

The switch showed the interplay between capitalism and communism and both systems' dependence on oil, he added.

Long-time Bayreuth-goers have learned to cope with different directors' takes on works that have been playing for 150 years and have only grown in popularity.

The opening of the festival season was marked with a morning musical ceremony beside Wagner's grave.

Trumpet players of the Festival orchestra and the Festival chorus performed a chorale from his "Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg" for several hundred people.

"I do this every single solitary year. I find it riveting and unbelievably touching," said Siobhan Conroy of Dublin who, with her husband Patrick von Gordon, lives in Bayreuth.

"The singing has a certain resonance on a morning like today, with the sun shining through the trees and so many people have come to celebrate the genius that was Richard Wagner."

Four More of My Most Useful iPad (and iPhone) Apps for Our Sandwich Generation Family

Thanks to CamWow - I have double the pink flowers for Pink SaturdayIn our family, iPads are synonymous with photos! Of course, they have plenty of other great uses ? reading books, listening to audio programs, watching TV shows, keeping up-to-date on weather conditions, etc. But photos are what generate the biggest smiles on the faces of all my Sandwich Generation kith and kin ? from my senior mom to my littlest grandkids.

Some apps that we especially enjoy are:

  1. Instagram ? even my oldest grandkids are using this and I'm tickled pink to say I got an invite from them as well. Very thrilling! We keep the settings on private so it's all just family and close friends. A nice treat on the busy internet highway.
  2. Camwow ? this continues to be a hit with the younger set and you'll find many of the hilarious photos popping up periodically on my computer screen saver, tho my senior mom is not as big a fan so they are NOT on her iPad (for the most part).? Thanks to CamWow ? I have double the pink blooms for Pink Saturday in the photo above. And a great giggle with my "neck-less" grandson in the photo below. What do you think? :) ?
  3. Flipboard - I just recently added this along with Instagram to my senior mom's iPad. I had used it before and liked it. Since she wasn't quite sure how to work the Instagram app, I thought it might be easier for her to use and I was right. She can often open it herself and flip through the latest photos of her grandkids AND great-grandkids, near and far. Even if she sometimes needs help finding her spot, overall, this has been one of the easier iPad apps to use.
  4. Color Cap ? This is still a big fave of mine for adding encouraging Bible verses to various photos. They've popped up here and in other places online, as well as arriving in text messages and emails to various loved ones of all ages far and wide.?

WOW - no neck on grandkid - or is there hehehehehehe -?

How about you? Have you found some good photo apps that are especially easy and/or?for you, your senior parents and those sweet grandkids? We'd love to hear!?

P.S. The latest #ElderCareChat is out and quite useful for many of us in the Sandwich Generation ? the topic was Assisted Living Facilities! You can find the recap at Seniors For Living and big thanks to Michelle and Denise from Caregiving for regularly hosting this useful resource on Twitter.?

Kaye

P.S. Thank you so much for your comments. I appreciate them very much and read each one. I also do my best to reply to them all but, as you can imagine, there are times (many times, lately :) ) when caregiving needs do not allow for that. Thank you for your patience and your sweet comments.

ArtsCenter Stage's ?12th Annual 10 by 10 in the Triangle Festival ...

The ArtsCenter in Carrboro will present "10 by 10 in the Triangle" on July 18-21

The ArtsCenter in Carrboro will present ?10 by 10 in the Triangle? on July 18-21

ArtsCenter Stage?s 12th Annual 10 by 10 in the Triangle Festival starts slowly with the earthbound ?My Name Is Yin,? written by San Francisco, CA playwright Tom Swift and directed by Ian Bowater. The author throws everything but the kitchen sink into this 15-minute Theatre of the Absurd-style mashup of comedy and fantasy and God knows what else whose catalyst is the mysterious appearance of 70 shoes filled with butter on a Swedish mountainside.

Mark Filiaci chronicles this tedious affair as a world-weary journalist, sitting on the audience-right side of the stage and typing as the play?s events unfold to his right, Mary Forester is delightful as an expatriate American brown bear who wanders through the proceedings, and Michael Brocki and Leanne Norton Heintz provide some chuckles as a couple of hunters whose romance hits the rocks (pun intended) on this not-so-magical mountain. But ?My Name Is Yin? wears out its welcome long before the (figurative) final curtain falls in the Earl and Rhoda Wynn Theater at The ArtsCenter in Carrboro, NC.

?

Next up is ?will/did/is,? written by Brookline, MA dramatist Patrick Gabridge and directed by Joshua Benjamin. Alphonse Nicholson and Amanda Scherle play two time travelers from the future who take the audience for an amusing ride on the subway in present-day Boston.

?

?New Year?s Eve,? penned by David MacGregor of Howell, MI and staged by Jerry Sipp, stars Owen Daly and LaKeisha Coffey as a curmudeonly old fossil and his caretaker.

?

?What You Don?t Know,? written by Durham playwright Mora Harris and directed by Jason Tyne-Zimmerman, is a devilishly funny two-hander, starring Amanda Scherle and Brett Stafford as a road crew hilariously shooting the breeze as they shovel up roadkill and speculate on what animal it is whose squashed remains they are scooping up from the asphalt.

?

?The 5564 to Toronto,? written by Santa Monica, CA dramatist Karen JP Howes and directed by Lori Mahl, ends Act One on a high note. Mary Forester is charming as an increasingly nervous young female traveler, confronted in a deserted bus station by a mysterious stranger (nicely played by Alphonse Nicholson). He insists that her bus is headed for a disaster that will prove fatal to her, and she has the choice of heeding his LARMING warning or dismissing it as the ravings of a bus-station loony tune.

?

?Fruit,? written by Austin, TX play writer Abe Koogler and directed by Leslie Cloninger, opens Act Two with a forgettable comedy that uses an apple as a metaphor for the well-known gay-bashing slur. Michael Brocki, LaKeisha Coffey, Leanne Heintz, Alphonse Nicholson, and Brett Stafford truly make much ado about not much of anything.

?

?A Gun on the Table,? written by Margy Ragsdale of Knoxville, TN and directed by Chris Chiron, is another quirky comedy. When the figurative curtain rises, AN OMINOUS silence has fallen between a couple played by Mark Filaci and Bonnie Roe. He has a revolver on the table. So, will their relationship end with a bang?

?

?Zero Mile Mark,? written by Pittsburgh, PA playwright Carol Mullen and directed by Gregor McElvogue, stars LaKeisha Coffey, Mary Forester, and Amanda Scherle as a feisty trio of mountain-climbing lesbians who have a fateful encounter way up on the mountain.

?

?Dr. Jekyll and Little Miss Hyde,? written by Sean Abley of Los Angeles, CA and directed by Mark Filiaci, is a gender-bending comic riff on the famous Robert Louis Stevenson horror story, set in Victorian London. Owen Daley and Leanne Heintz cross-dress for success ? and arguably earn the biggest laughs of the evening!

?

?Detective Stories,? written by Brooklyn, NY dramatist Philip J. Kaplan and directed by Michael O?Foghludha, is a series of short but ingenious whodunits in which Michael Brocki, Mark Filiaci, and Bonnie Roe take turns playing detetives and murder victims.

?

Lighting designer Liz Droessler, costume designer Chelsea Kurtzman, properties designer Brittany Bugge, stage manager Jenn Evans, and onstage singer and musician/sound designer Nathan Jeremy Logan also deserve kudos for their contribution to this mostly enjoyable smorgasbord of 10 short plays, selected from 750 scripts submitted by playwrights from the United States and several foreign countries.

Scottish independence: currency union ?best? for UK

Alex Salmond has insisted his ?plan A? of keeping the pound if Scotland votes for independence will win agreement from the UK Government.

The First Minister hinted that without a deal on the UK?s ?assets? in the wake of a Yes vote in next year?s referendum, the Scottish Government could refuse to accept a share of UK debts.

He argued that an independent Scotland would be ?entitled to share of the assets of the United Kingdom - at least if they want us to accept a share of the liabilities of the United Kingdom?.

Chancellor George Osborne has already said it is ?unlikely?? the rest of the UK would agree for Scotland to keep the pound in a formal currency union if the country did vote to leave the UK.

A Treasury report, published earlier this year, stated: ?In the event of Scottish independence, the economic rationale for the continuing UK to enter a formal sterling union with another state is not clear.?

But in a speech in the Isle of Man - which uses its own currency, the Manx pound, as well as sterling - the SNP leader said: ?An independent Scotland will retain the pound and we will use our sovereignty to negotiate a formal currency union with the rest of the UK.

?Co-operation and agreement would be required, but the things we would need to agree on would often be straightforward - for example, in relation to limits of budget deficits.?

?Best? for UK

The First Minister today insisted establishing a formal currency union would be ?best? for the rest of the UK if Scotland voted for independence.

He told BBC Radio Scotland?s Good Morning Scotland programme: ?There are pretty fundamental reasons why it is not going to be the case that they would refuse a formal currency union - firstly, sterling is as much our currency as it is George Osborne?s, it was actually a Scot that founded the Bank of England.

?There?s also the fact that we have paid into that financial asset of the United Kingdom and we are entitled to share of the assets of the United Kingdom - at least if they want us to accept a share of the liabilities of the United Kingdom.?

He continued: ?It?s best for both countries, it?s best for Scotland because we do a huge amount of trade with the rest of the UK and it?s best for the UK because they do a huge amount of trade with Scotland.

?In fact, the rest of the UK exports more to Scotland than it does to Russia, China and India combined. It?s the second most important export market for the rest of the United Kingdom.?

Mr Salmond insisted: ?We will get the formal currency union, for the reasons I?ve just stated, because they can?t claim sole title over the assets to the United Kingdom, unless of course they want us to accept no share of the liabilities of the United Kingdom, and I?m quite certain that won?t be the position of the UK Government.?

When asked if adopting a similar approach to that used on the Isle of Man could be a plan B, the First Minister said: ?No. We will rest on plan A and plan A will work for a range of reasons - not least of which it is advantageous for the rest of the UK to have a formal currency union with Scotland.?

Japan police bust overweight sex firm

Keiko Saito, 41, and one of her employees are suspected of conspiring to run a prostitution business under the name ?Makkusu Bodi? (Max Body), which boasted that it catered for men who like ?explosive boobs and bums?, police said.

Saito is alleged to have had about 30 overweight women in her employ, including one who tipped the scales at more than 150 kilograms, Jiji Press reported.

Police say punters in Tokyo could telephone to request a visit in their home or hotel room, a service called ?deri-heru? (delivery health) that is widespread in Japan, where it is illegal to sell penetrative sex.

Saito, who is believed to have earned about 400 million yen (US$4 million) over three years, had previously worked as a prostitute, Jiji said. She began her business because she believed larger women were popular with customers, the agency added.

DOJ urged to press civil rights charges against Zimmerman

Zimmerman reacts to the not guilty verdict, July 13, 2013. (Reuters/Pool)

The NAACP, the Rev. Jesse Jackson and other civil rights activists are calling on the U.S. Department of Justice and Attorney Gen. Eric Holder to press federal civil rights charges against George Zimmerman, the former neighborhood watchman who was acquitted by a Sanford, Fla., jury Saturday in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

?The most fundamental of civil rights ? the right to life ? was violated the night George Zimmerman stalked and then took the life of Trayvon Martin," NAACP President Ben Jealous wrote in a letter to Holder shortly after the verdict was announced. "We ask that the Department of Justice file civil rights charges against Mr. Zimmerman for this egregious violation. Please address the travesties of the tragic death of Trayvon Martin by acting today.?

?This verdict represents a tragic miscarriage of justice," Barbara Arnwine, president of the Washington, D.C.-based Lawyers? Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, said in a statement. "Yet, there is still the potential for justice to be served through a civil suit brought about by Trayvon Martin?s surviving family members, and also through civil rights charges being brought against Mr. Zimmerman by the Department of Justice."

The Justice Dept. launched a probe of the Zimmerman case last year, but has yet to comment on Zimmerman's acquittal.

?If we find evidence of a potential federal criminal civil rights crime, we will take appropriate action," Holder said in 2012 during a keynote speech to Al Sharpton's National Action Network convention. "And at every step, the facts and law will guide us forward.?

But Holder, the nation's first African-American attorney general, cautioned in subsequent comments that there is a ?very high barrier? when seeking to bring federal criminal charges in such cases, TheHill.com noted.

A Justice Department official told CNN late Saturday night that it "continues to evaluate the evidence generated during the federal investigation, as well as the evidence and testimony from the state trial."

On Sunday, Jackson called on the Justice Department to "intervene" and ?take this to another level.?

"I remain stunned at the decision," Jackson said on CNN's "New Day." "That the grown man, armed, murdered the unarmed boy going home."

"I think that we clearly must move on to the next step in terms of the federal government and in terms of the civil courts," Sharpton said on MSNBC Saturday. "Clearly, we want people to be disciplined, strategic. This is a slap in the face to those that believe in justice in this country."

PA supermarket manager recognized for workforce

PORT ANGELES ? Finding workers with a strong work ethic can be a challenge, but Port Angeles Safeway manager Mike LaGrange has a knack for finding the right employees.

LaGrange was presented recently with the Clallam County Health & Human Services Business Leadership Advisory Committee Employer of the Quarter award by Kathy Burrer, executive director of Dungeness Courte and a committee member.

The award recognizes employers who demonstrate diversity and inclusion in their hiring practices, particularly in hiring people with disabilities.

The Safeway at 110 E. Third St. has more employees with disabilities receiving supported employment than any other employer in Clallam County, according to county Health & Human Services.

Safeway, LaGrange said, ?actively tries to hire people? who mirror the community.

?This is at all levels, from entry to management,? LaGrange added.

He and his hiring coordinator take ?great joy in mentoring employees to be the best that they can be,? he said.

?I've found that people with disabilities are often a forgotten segment of our population and sometimes passed over.

?So, if you find the right job match for them, many times you will have an employee who is grateful, happier, has better attendance and is dedicated.?

Many customers recognize the value to the community ?to have an inclusive business,? he added.

Hikers in the Enchantment area of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness have been reporting close encounters with mountain goats.

Three years ago, a Port Angeles man, Bob Boardman, 63, was fatally gored by a mountain goat on a trail in Olympic National Park.

Dams evaluated
PORTLAND, Ore. ? The federal agencies responsible for making Columbia Basin hydroelectric dams safer for salmon said they are doing a good job, helping more young fish survive their migration downstream and producing higher returns among threatened and endangered runs.

The Bonneville Power Administration, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and U.S. Bureau of Reclamation have released a draft evaluation of their efforts since 2008 to implement the improvements laid out ?by the NOAA Fisheries Service.

But conservation groups said that despite spending $600 million a year, the agencies are no closer to getting 13 runs of salmon and steelhead off the threatened and endangered species lists.

Save Our Wild Salmon and Earthjustice said the single most effective measure ? spilling more water over dams rather than running it through turbines ? is not being done enough.

Food stamps
WASHINGTON ? House approval of a scaled-back farm bill is setting up what could be an even bigger fight over food stamps and the role of domestic food aid in the United States.

Food stamps have been a part of farm bills since the 1970s to gain urban Democratic votes for the rural measure. That union has soured as the food aid has exploded in cost and Republicans have taken aim at the program.

Republican House leaders won passage of the smaller farm bill on a party-line vote Thursday by dropping a section of the bill that dealt with food stamps, saying they would deal with that issue separately.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said Republicans will ?act with dispatch? on a food stamp bill.

Arsenic in juice
WASHINGTON ? The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is setting a new limit on the level of arsenic allowed in apple juice after more than a year of public pressure from consumer groups worried about the contaminant's effects on children.

Nationwide, apple juice is second only to orange juice in popularity, according to industry groups.

Studies have shown that the juice contains very low levels of arsenic, a cancer-causing agent found in everything from water to soil to pesticides.

The FDA has monitored arsenic in apple juice for decades and has long said the levels are not dangerous to consumers, in particular small children who favor fruit juice.

But now the agency is putting in place a strict standard on how much arsenic is acceptable in apple juice, limiting the amount to the same level currently permitted in drinking water.

Under the new regulation, apple juice containing more than 10 parts per billion could be removed from the market, and companies could face legal action.

Agency officials stressed that the vast majority of juices on the market are already below the threshold.

Airline raises fees
SEATTLE ? Alaska Airlines is raising its fee for checking a suitcase to $25, bringing it in line with most major airlines.

For tickets purchased on or after Oct. 30, the Seattle-based airline will charge passengers $25 each for the first and second checked bags. Additional bags will cost $75.

Alaska currently charges $20 per bag for the first three suitcases.

The airline will keep its baggage service guarantee. If a passenger's bags are not at the baggage claim area within 20 minutes of the plane parking at the gate, Alaska will give them a $20 discount code for use on a future flight or 2,000 bonus frequent flier miles.

The discount will increase to $25 and the miles to 2,500 on Oct. 30.

The time remains the same, according to spokesman Marianne Lindsey.

Delta Air Lines is the only major airline to offer a rebate of baggage fees but only for bags that are delayed 12 hours or more.

Alaska is also increasing the fee to change tickets to $125. Currently, Alaska charges $75 if the change is made online and $100 if the change is made through a call center. Passengers who change tickets 60 or more days from the day of travel will not incur any fee at all.

American Airlines, Delta, United Airlines and US Airways all increased change fees on domestic tickets from $150 to $200 in May.

Alaska Airlines Group Inc. expects the higher fees to result in $50 million of additional revenue each year.

Quotes, reaction, day after Zimmerman verdict

The acquittal of George Zimmerman on all charges in the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin spurred protest rallies across the country and once again sparked a nationwide debate over the U.S. justice system and race relations in America.

Here are some key quotes from Sunday:

"There is a difference between the law and what people think is fundamentally justice."

? Barbara Arnwine, president and executive director of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, a Washington-based civil rights group.

-------------------------------------

"I'm sure jurors did what they felt was right in accordance with the law but maybe the law is wrong, maybe society is wrong. There's a lot that needs fixing."

? Jessica Nacinovich, congregant of the Middle Collegiate Church in Manhattan.

---------------------------------------

"I know this case has elicited strong passions. And in the wake of the verdict, I know those passions may be running even higher. But we are a nation of laws, and a jury has spoken. I now ask every American to respect the call for calm reflection from two parents who lost their young son."

? President Barack Obama.

----------------------------------------

"He killed a human being and he walked away from that courthouse scot free. It's just terrible."

? Tara Banks, a 46-year-old black woman from Gainesville, Fla., who said the verdict was causing her to lose faith in the courts.

------------------------------------------

"We're going to raise our voices against the root causes of this kind of tragedy. We'll aim our fight for justice against the ease with which people can get firearms in this country."

? Excerpt of a sermon by the Rev. Jacqueline Lewis at Middle Collegiate Church in Manhattan.

Church bells ring out to honour Lac-Megantic dead one week after tragedy

LAC-MEGANTIC, Que. - A week ago, the pealing of church bells in Lac-Megantic meant a call to worship. Today, it will be to honour the dead and missing in one of Canada's most horrific train derailments.

The bells of Ste-Agnes church will chime 50 times, followed by a minute of silence at noon.

"Think of the people who are enduring this, who are in mourning," said Jean-Denis Martel, as he sat in the church on Friday, his voice choked with emotion.

"It's good to take a moment of silence, for those with loved ones. It's not easy. It hurts bad."

The tribute follows one Friday night in which people gathered for a candlelight vigil as darkness settled over the town.

They stood in small clusters, whispering to each other or hugging on the steps of the church. Some arrived with small children in strollers.

"In one way or another, we're all affected," said Bianca Fillion.

But the vigil offered some solace.

"We can feel the love," said Cynthia Jacques.

Another group walked solemnly through Old Montreal before stopping in front of historic Notre-Dame Basilica where they erected a small shrine.

A visibly moved Richard Lafontaine said he had to show support for the people in Lac-Megantic.

"Solidarity," he said. "We're participating in a movement of solidarity for the region and especially the town."

Vigils were held in other Quebec communities including Sherbrooke, Quebec City, Trois-Rivieres and Gatineau as well as cities outside the province such as Winnipeg.

The Lac-Megantic vigil had initially been cancelled because the community is still under a state of emergency. Quebec provincial police, who are busy combing through the obliterated downtown in search of bodies, said they couldn't spare the resources to handle a large crowd.

But that didn't stop heartsick townsfolk from gathering to share their grief and light candles in memory of missing and dead loved ones.

The tributes are only just beginning.

Quebecers are also being urged to attend at least three benefit concerts scheduled for next week. Events are planned in Montreal, Quebec City and St-Georges-de-Beauce. Players from the Montreal Canadiens and Philadelphia Flyers are among those contributing items for charity auctions for Lac-Megantic.

When the clock struck 1:14 a.m. on Saturday, it marked one week to the minute when an out-of-control caravan of rail tanker cars came rumbling into the town, jumped the tracks and exploded into searing balls of flame.

The Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Inc. train had been parked for the night a few kilometres away on a steep grade. The engineer had left it unattended to get some shuteye.

The explosion and fire triggered by the derailment incinerated much of Lac-Megantic's downtown, which was dotted with historic buildings, homes and commercial outlets.

About 1,800 people had to flee the area but most were able to return as the week progressed.

Along with grief there is also a lot of anger at the railway as townsfolk struggle to cope with their terrible losses. An appearance by railway chairman Ed Burkhardt at an impromptu news conference earlier in the week sparked outrage and Burkhardt was reportedly advised to scrap plans to address a town meeting.

Officials have confirmed 28 deaths so far and have been able to identify eight of the victims. However, another 22 people remain missing and are also feared to have perished.

Provincial police, backed up by the RCMP, have cordoned off a swath of the town to facilitate the recovery effort and the investigation of what has been declared a crime scene.

Police have already arrested one trespasser and on Friday warned people not to climb fences erected around the area or try to get a look at the devastated area from surrounding rooftops.

Insp. Michel Forget said several people had been spotted doing that and he warned of the danger of such behaviour.

"We don't want any more victims," he said.

The federal Transportation Safety Board said its investigation into the derailment will likely take months.

"This may well be the most devastating rail accident in Canadian history," board chairwoman Wendy Tadros told a news conference.

Elsewhere, the chairman of the House of Commons transportation committee said a push for parliamentarians to meet this summer to assess railway safety is more about partisan politics than Quebec's catastrophe.

Conservative Larry Miller made the remarks from his riding in Owen Sound, Ont., in response to calls by the NDP and Bloc Quebecois to convene hearings next month.

"There has to be something concrete that we can actually do or it's just a waste of everybody's time," he said.

The yellow British Open awaits at Muirfield

GULLANE, Scotland (AP) ? This already is shaping up as a yellow British Open.

Golf's oldest championship returns to Muirfield after a wet spring that was ideal for growing thick grass, followed by a dry summer that has yielded three "F'' words that are ideal for a links course.

Firm. Fast. Fiery.

The yellow hue of the fairways and wisps of knee-high native grass framing them make that obvious. The trick is to figure out how far the ball is going ? not in the air, but once it starts bouncing on the ground.

Angel Cabrera set out Sunday to learn on the sixth hole, 461 yards and bending to the left with a bunker on the left side.

The two-time major champion from Argentina hit 4-iron with a right-to-left wind and it stopped a yard short of the bunker. Then he hit a bullet of a driver that he thought was ideal until he reached the crest of a slight hill and didn't see a ball in the fairway. The ball was running so fast that it went through the fairway and into the rough.

"The great thing about links golf is it gives variety and options how to play," two-time Open champion Padraig Harrington said. "You can have three players taking on a shot from the same place, and you might see three very different shots. You see a little bit of everything."

He played his first ball just short of a bunker to the right of the green and stared at it for the longest time, taking an unconventional route that makes links golf so different. Instead of pitching over the sand, he bumped a 9-iron on the ground, along the edge of the bunker, and watched it roll up the slope and down toward the pin.

"Bien, Seve," said his swing coach, Charlie Epps, as high a compliment as can be paid.

Seve Ballesteros was a three-time Open champion who spent a career inventing shots that took circuitous routes to their destinations. That's what it can take at an Open, especially when the grass is yellow and crusty.

It's something Tiger Woods tends to do well.

Woods was among dozens of players who used a sunny, warm Sunday to get their first look at Muirfield, which is hosting its 16th Open dating to 1892. He played with Jason Day and Dustin Johnson, with girlfriend Lindsey Vonn in tow. The left elbow strain that has kept Woods out of competition since the U.S. Open is not expected to be an issue. Woods said he was "full go," which is the reason he took three weeks off to let his elbow heal.

Woods is the betting favorite to end his five-year drought in the majors, and for good reason. He already has won four times this year on the PGA Tour. He's a three-time Open champion. He loves to create shots. And the conditions are favorable.

As players made their way around Muirfield, more than one of them mentioned Hoylake. That was considered the last true "yellow" Open, with a dry, hot spell on the northwest coast of England. That's the last British Open that Woods won with supreme control. That one was famous for Woods hitting only one driver in 72 holes ? on the 16th hole, and the shot wound up in the 17th fairway.

"Did he hit it there on purpose?" said Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano.

"No, that was his normal shot," Cabrera replied with a laugh.

The 441-yard eighth hole proved to be a great example of playing the ball in the air and on land. Cabrera looked at the pot bunkers that dotted the landscape on the right side of the fairway and chose a 6-iron off the tee to keep left of the trouble, and to keep his ball from running through into high grass. His only other option was to hit driver over the trouble.

Teeing up another ball, he launched his driver high and long ? far different from the low, penetrating flight on the sixth hole ? and the ball stopped rolling when it went into a cross bunker about 40 yards short of the green.

"There's no way to know how far the ball is going," he said to Fernandez-Castano, who opted for a 5-iron off the tee.

The forecast is for dry conditions the entire week, which could make the British Open tougher than usual. Then again, players were quick to remember the last time at Muirfield in 2002. It wasn't nearly this dry ? that was a "green" Open ? though the weather was reasonable until a freak storm arrived without warning on Saturday.

The wind chill plunged into the low 40s, the wind approach 40 mph and the rain was relentless. Woods was just enough off his game that he shot 81 that day, ending his hopes of a calendar Grand Slam.

"It's amazing golf," Harrington said. "Someone genuinely can hit a drive 400 yards, and then turn around and be able to carry it 240 yards. It suits the guy who can manipulate his golf ball, which is what links golf is all about."
